What is a weekend warrior injury?

The term “weekend warrior” refers to athletes who usually only participate in sports and activities during their spare time, especially over the weekend. This is typically due to a busy schedule, filled with a full-time job, children, social events, and other activities that prevent a person from exercising regularly. While weekend warriors tend to be in relatively good physical shape, they sometimes are more susceptible to injuries, such as tendonitis and joint pain, due to their inability to properly train on a consistent basis. Some of the activities most commonly associated with weekend warrior injuries include weekend sports leagues, races, endurance challenges, mountain climbing, and hockey—among others.

The most common weekend warrior injuries include:

  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Tennis elbow
  • Sprained ankle
  • Shin splints
