Stretch Therapy

What is stretch therapy?

Fascial Stretch Therapy, a specific form of physical therapy, is a unique system of assisted stretch therapy based on table stretches. The therapy works on the fascia and joint capsules to achieve optimal flexibility, performance, strength, and relief of tension or pain. By manipulating these points of the body during stretches, we are able to help you maximize your flexibility, decrease pain (if needed), and reduce the potential for future injuries.

Learn more about fascial stretch therapy below, or schedule a consultation with our certified stretch therapists at Performance Health in NYC & Pearl River to find out if fascial stretch therapy is right for you.

Why is fascial stretch therapy used?

The fascia tissues are layered connective tissues surrounding your joints, bones, muscles, and tissues. Your joint capsules are also connective structures, which surrounds joints and helps your joint to move. When the fascia tissues or joint capsule is injured or restricted, the following problems can occur:

  • Decreased joint space
  • Degenerative diseases
  • Osteoarthritis (OA)
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Trigger points
  • Strains
  • Tendonitis
  • Tears
  • Decreased blood flow
  • Lowered energy levels

What are the advantages of undergoing fascial stretch therapy?

Stretch therapy can help you improve your sports and functional performance by:

  • Increasing flexibility
  • Increasing joint space
  • Improving muscle tone
  • Increasing blood flow
  • Improving energy levels
  • Decreasing risk of injury
  • Reducing or eliminating pain

What does fascial stretch therapy involve?

During a visit to Performance Health, you will lie down on a medical bed while your physical therapist moves your body into positions that target the fascia and joint capsules. Fascia stretching itself should cause little or no discomfort, and it takes minimal time to complete a therapy session. During each stretch therapy session, you will have time to speak with your stretch therapist about any discomfort or pain you have felt since the last stretch therapy session and modifications to your stretches can be made as needed.

If you are suffering from tendonitis pain, the first step to improving your health and returning to your normal activities is to schedule an evaluation at Performance Health. Our physicians can help you get back to performance-level health. Call one of our New York offices at 212.486.8616, or fill out the form below to request an appointment now.
